Economic conditions were a critical factor influencing political and military conditions in South Vietnam. Much of the rural discontent with the national government stemmed from poor economic conditions in rural areas. During the Vietnam War, the outsized economic influence of the American military presence weakened and destabilized the national economy, further destabilizing the South Vietnamese state.242 Records
